Best way to check if a voice over artist is qualified or not

So my company is planning to hire a voice over artist for various projects, including a short commercial and a podcast show. But we’re also looking for someone flexible enough to work with other future projects. So a friend recommended this English voice over artist to us. We haven’t tried hiring such professional before so we don’t know where to start. So how do we do this? Should we directly talk to the artist? Should we listen to her demos first? What do you think?
